Miyanohara Pit at the Miike Coal Mine
三池炭鉱 宮原坑
Added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015 is Miyanohara Pit at the Miike Coal Mine, one of the Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution.
The Pit began its operation back in 1898 and yielded anywhere from 400,000 to 500,000 tons of coal annually. Here remains today is the second vertical shaft sinking machine which was first activated in 1901. The facilities on site have been left relatively untouched even years after shutting down. Some of the most important pieces are still in tact including some of the most monumental buildings such as the old steel shaft remaining in the country as well as the brick room with hoist control for the winch.
The scene at the site is sure to bring back the old-time industrial town feel to the eyes of the visitors.
Adjacent to this particular site is a part of UNESCO-registered Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution, the Miike Coal Railway.
