Optician Matsunaga seems a usual optician in a shopping street from the appearance. However, inside the store, a rare glasses making workshop is held. At the workshop, participants can create original glasses.
It starts with selecting the materials. The participants can choose their favorites among the prepared materials. The next is the design. They can draw by themselves or pick a shape of glasses in the store. After that, they cut the parts out using a jig saw, and shape the details and polish with a file. If all goes smoothly, it will be finished from 6 to 8 hours. The assembling will be left in the hands of opticians.
The instructor is the owner, Mr. Masahiro Matsunaga. Although, at first, he was not happy to succeed the family business and had reluctantly worked, after around two years, he was attracted by glasses and even started to want to make glasses by himself. However, he didn’t know how to make them and there was no one who can teach him, either. Then, he collected information on line and began to practice glasses making diligently using woods. Although he has learned from an optician in Fukui Prefecture’s Sabae City where glasses industry has flourished, after all, he has almost learned by himself. At present, he has a training session with his colleagues in Sabae City once a year.
At the glasses making workshop, he refrains from providing too much advices so that participants can make glasses freely. While he says, ”I want participants to make glasses which makes they happy rather than making suitable ones. Although I don’t make any money on the workshop ...”, he seems so happy when he talks about glasses.
