Kibe Tunnel

金辺トンネル

Kibe Tunnel, located between the JR Hitahikosan Line’s Yobuno Station and Saidosho Station. It was opened in 1925 in order to transport Chikuho’s coal to the port of Kokura. A total of 1,444m in length, at the time of its construction it gathered much attention as it was originally planned to be the country’s longest double-track tunnel. Unfortunately, the double-track never went into operation, but the impressive brick arches have made it a popular spot for photos. It’s registered as a Fukuoka Railway Heritage.
