Hiraodai Controlled Grass Burning

Controlled Grass Burning at Hiraodai

At Hiraodai, a controlled grass burn is conducted every spring. Originally, the burn covered around 50 hectares near Honmura to control pests and improve grazing land. However, fires sometimes spread to other areas, so in 1992, the objectives were expanded to include:

  • Protecting local residents’ property and safety

  • Preventing danger to visitors

  • Preventing fire from spreading to surrounding forests

The Hiraodai Grass Burning Committee, organized mainly by local neighborhood associations, expanded the burn area to 330 hectares in 1993. The area reached  380 hectares until 2015 and has been 340 hectares since 2016.  Sora Land Hiraodai
