Hakushu Festival and Parade on Water

To honor the great achievements of the “Poet Saint” Hakushū Kitahara and to share Yanagawa, the “Water Town” that nurtured his poetry, with people across Japan while promoting local tourism, the Hakushūsai Water Parade is held every year. This tradition, which began in memory of the 10th anniversary of Hakushū’s passing, marks its 73rd edition in 2025.

As in previous years, the festival begins with an opening ceremony at the Hakushū Poetry Monument, honoring the memory of Hakushū Kitahara. The boats then follow the upriver course, accompanied along the way by traditional performing arts, taiko drumming, choral singing, and brass band music.
Lanterns float gently on the water, creating a magical atmosphere. The heartfelt hospitality of the local community can be felt throughout the parade, which concludes with a spectacular fireworks display at the final stop.
This water parade, unique to Yanagawa—the “Water Town”—offers visitors a truly enchanting evening filled with music, light, and the spirit of Hakushū.
