Experience a Traditional Way of Life That Nurtures the Body and Soul
Over the years, Iizuka City has transformed from a Nagasaki Kaido highway post-station town into a coal-producing area and, eventually, a modern hub for blockchain and other cutting-edge technologies. The city is now developing ways for visitors to experience traditional village life, including farming, through the restoration of historic Japanese-style houses with straw-thatched roofs.
<Activities>
To preserve and cultivate the only remaining Horiike takana leaf mustard plants in the country, guests are invited to sow, plant, and harvest them here. Guests will join in the traditional daily routine of cooking rice in the kamado (cooking stove) of a historic house, tend to old tools, and carefully clean the inside and outside of the house. Participants can also learn about the wisdom of past generations through Zen meditation, making dried plums and persimmons, and painting with persimmon tannin. Open-air baths made from reused miso barrels and a café that utilizes scrap wood and old fixtures also allow visitors to relax in a cozy space where they can feel the warmth of the wood.
