Explore the Ariake Sea—Home to Japan’s Largest Tidal Flats
Yanagawa City faces the Ariake Sea and is known for having the largest tidal flats in Japan, with the water level receding by up to six meters at low tide. Known for its waterfront, the city boasts a rich history and culture, having once flourished as the castle town of the Tachibana clan. Yanagawa also offers a range of tourism-related experiences that enable visitors to fully enjoy the Ariake Sea.

■Ariake Sea activities
From Mutsugoro Land, visitors can experience “Kumode” net fishing and “Mutsukake” mudskipper fishing (April–October), nori making (mid-November–February), and salt making (year-round). “Kumode” net fishing involves visitors teaming up with an instructor to catch fish and shellfish from a pier that extends into the Ariake Sea. The “Mutsukake” activity offers visitors the chance to try their hand at catching mutsugoro mudskippers, an endearing species of fish found in the Ariake Sea.
■Other activities
A hands-on grape harvesting experience is available from August to September at a farm near Mutsugoro Land.
