Eguchi Kamaboko (steamed fish paste)

江口蒲鉾

Eguchi Kamaboko (steamed fish paste) is a Kamaboko specialty store which was founded in 1980 (Showa 55) along the Yabe River. All the products are kneaded by a stone mill. As high-quality white fish like codfish and white croaker are carefully kneaded for a long time, the Kamaboko get plump when it is steamed. Especially, the hand-made white croaker Kamaboko with a hand-made board is the masterpiece. The soft, smooth, moist texture may overturn the image of Kamaboko. The reputation of “the most delicious Kamaboko ever” is understandable. The Chikuwa (a tubular roll of steamed fish) is also popular. Mentai Chikuwa (Chikuwa with seasoned cod roe) and Otsukuri Chikuwa are sold at a floating gift shop along the route of the Yanagawa river cruising. The spicy flavor of Mentai Chikuwa goes with alcohol. There are various Tempuras, kneaded and fried fish past with seafood and seasonal vegetables. Shoppers may have hard time to choose one. There is also an array of Kamaboko for gift like decorated Kamaboko which adds glamour for celebration. There is Takana-maki which is made using a specialty of Miyama City, mustard greens. The heart-shaped Kamaboko for the Valentine’s Day was born meeting ladies’ request. It is so cute as to be ordered even not on the Valentine’s Day. The name can be put on it as well.
*The products are purchasable on line.
