Ginkgo tree of the Thunder God Shrine

雷神社の公孫樹

Experience the life force that still continues to color the area with beautiful golden hues!

The Thunder God Shrine sits halfway up 955-meter-high Mt. It is located in the middle of the Raisan Circumference Nature Trail, a short distance up from Raisan Sennyo-ji Temple. The large ginkgo on the left side of the stone steps leading up to the shrine. The tree is estimated to be over 900 years old, with a height of 37 m and trunk circumference of 7 m. It was designated as a natural monument of the prefecture in 1960.
The ginkgo sprouts in spring and casts a beautiful green shade in summer. In autumn, it bears ginkgo nuts, and in winter, the sunlight shining through its deciduous branches is beautiful and reflects the changes of the four seasons well. Nearby are two giant trees called Kannon cedars, and the area around the shrine is both serene and mysterious.
