Shikaumi-jinja Shrine Okitsu-gu Shrine

志賀海神社 沖津宮

It is believed that this land was the origin of the Azumi people, a powerful ancient clan that commanded the people of the sea. This shrine, dedicated to a god of the sea, is sung of in the Manyoshuu as follows: ”Even if we pass beyond the cape of the raging bell, we shall never forget Shika, god of the ocean.” At that island’s tip is another island connected by land where Okitsu-gu is enshrined; this location has been a ’power spot’ since ancient times.
