Nanzoin Temple, the head sacred place of Sasaguri Shikoku Pilgrimage, is also an independent  head temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect of Buddhism. The reclining Buddha statue (Shaka Nehanzo), built in 1995, is 41 meters long, 11 meters high, and 300 tons, making it one of the largest bronze statues in the world. Inside the body, there is a sacred space called “Busshari”, which houses Buddha’s remains. Visitors can also experience “sand-stepping of 88 temples of Shikoku”, pilgrimage simulation by stepping on sand (there is a fee to visit inside the body).
Thanks to the zealous missionary efforts of the priest and the enthusiasm of the local people, this temple is now counted one of the “Japan’s Three New Shikoku Pilgrimages”.

Nanzoin Temple is not a tourist attraction. It is a place of important prayer. Please visit here quietly and respectfully.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
