Kitakyushu City boasts one of the largest areas of bamboo forests in Japan.
The locally produced “Ouma bamboo shoots” are high-class bamboo shoots used in Kyoto's ryotei (Japanese-style restaurants). On the other hand, the problem of neglected bamboo forests, which cause the devastation of mountains, was also becoming serious."
In 2019, as a countermeasure, bamboo lanterns were made from bamboo that had been cut down, and this was the beginning of the “Kokura Castle Bamboo Light. The 30,000 bamboo lanterns lit around the Kokura Castle Keep Plaza provide a solemn and fantastic sight.
During the festival, the Kokura Castle Chrysanthemum Festival is also held at the same time.
