Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art

北九州市立美術館

Since its opening in 1974, the Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art has collected mainly the masterpieces of western Japanese, modern, block print, and Eastern as well as Western artists. At present, the museum houses about 6,800 works. It was the first in Japan to integrate a volunteer system, and the volunteers have promoted the practice of describing various works to visitors and activities to further art education.
A space to display the works of local artists is set up in the Citizen’s Gallery on the first floor. In an effort to introduce as many kinds of small works - like prints and rough sketches - as possible, there is also a special exhibition space on the third floor for themed mini-exhibitions, which regularly take place.
