Imamura Catholic Church (Imamura Tenshudo)

Interior tours of Imamura Tenshudo are currently suspended due to seismic strengthening and repair work.
The work is scheduled to last 8-10 years from 2021.
The exterior of the building can still be visited.

Beautiful Romanesque red brick Catholic church with two towers. It is one of the most valuable brick churches remaining in Japan and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property.
In 1867 (Keio 3), a layman in hiding in Imamura was discovered in this Imamura area by the Urakami congregation, who kept their faith alive while secretly maintaining contact with the Urakami congregation. With the return to Orthodox Catholicism, plans were made by Father Tamotsu Honda in 1908 (41st year of Meiji) and construction of the cathedral began with donations from other countries, especially Germany, and the labour of the congregation, and was completed in 1913 (Taisho 2). The stained glass windows and 14 sacred pictures of the Passion of Christ were made in France, the pillars are made of cedar from Mt Kora, and the bricks were custom-made.

Access	Nishitetsu Bus: 6 minutes walk from Imamura Tenshudo bus stop. 15 minutes drive from Ogori Station on the Nishitetsu Tenjin Omuta Line. Nishitetsu Amagi Line: 20 minutes on foot from Ozeki Station. 20 minutes by car from Tosu Station on the JR Kagoshima Main Line. About 10 minutes from the Chikugo Ogori IC on the Oita Expressway.
