Yamaguchi Sake Brewery Co., Ltd. — Brewer of “Niwa no Uguisu”

Sake born from pure water, fine rice, and masterful craftsmanship

Founded in 1832 (Tenpō 3 of the Edo period), this brewery produces the sake brand Niwa no Uguisu. According to tradition, bush warblers would fly from the historic Kitano Tenmangu Shrine to the brewery garden to drink from its spring water. Witnessing this, the 6th-generation head Risuke Yamaguchi vowed to brew sake worthy of Tenjin’s name, inspired by the purity of the water. This founding spirit became the origin of the sake’s name.

The current 11th-generation head, Tetsuo Yamaguchi, pursues the idea of “sake you’ll want another cup of,” continually challenging himself to create new value in sake.

The 260-year-old main house includes a retail shop selling “Niwa no Uguisu” sake, plum wine, amazake, and more. Visitors can also enjoy seasonal traditional decorations reflecting Japan’s cultural calendar.
