Tennen Shono
天然樟脳
The Gentle Fragrance of the Forest
Camphor production has supported daily life in Japan for over 400 years, valued as a natural insect repellent and fragrance.
Made by steaming wood chips from camphor trees and crystallizing the vapor, it takes about 6 tons of wood to produce just 25 kilograms of camphor.
The process also yields camphor oil, now popular as an aroma oil.
Although synthetic camphor once threatened its survival, Uchino Camphor in Miyama City continues to preserve this traditional craft today.
