Reiganji Temple

霊巌寺

The temple where Yamecha tea originated, with stunning, oddly shaped rocks created by nature in its precincts

The Zen temple "Reiganji" is located in a mountain village along the Kasahara River in the northern part of Kuroki Town, Yame City. Zen master Eirin Shuzui, who returned from Ming China about 600 years ago, built the temple because the scenery of this area was similar to that of Lingyan Temple in Suzhou, China, where he had once practiced asceticism.

It is said to be the birthplace of Yame tea, and a "tea offering ceremony" is held every May 2 around the time of the 88th night of the year.

On the back of the mountain, which in ancient times was a training center for people who practiced mountain asceticism, known as Shugendo or mountain asceticism, is Chinpo-iwa (male rock), one of the three largest rocks in Japan with a height of 12 meters and a diameter of 4 meters. There are also several other oddly shaped rocks such as Onna-iwa (Female Rock), Naka-jin-iwa (Middle Man Rock), Sainokawara-iwa (Sai-no-kawara Rock), and Zazen-iwa (Zen meditation rock) where a Zen master is said to have sat in meditation, all of which are exceptionally beautiful and magnificent. It is thought that the tuff and conglomerate rocks were formed into their present shape by erosion and weathering.
