Hoshino Village, part of Yame City, is surrounded by steep mountains and is home to the beautiful Hoshino River. The area, known as Oku-Yame, has a history of tea cultivation dating back to the Muromachi period. Its picturesque terraced rice fields and tea plantations, coupled with the sparkling night sky, have secured it a place on the list of “100 Best Villages in Japan.” Recently, an initiative has been launched to revitalize the area by cultivating the medicinal herb vetiver and renovating historic private residences.

<Activities>
Vetiver is a type of grass native to southern India that is also used as a perfume ingredient. Because its roots grow deep into the soil, it is being promoted as a new crop that can help prevent soil erosion while enriching the soil. This has led to the cultivation of vetiver becoming more widespread. Visitors will also be able to enjoy an aromatherapy experience utilizing the essential oil extracted from vetiver roots. Additionally, plans are now underway to renovate the thatched roof of a 270-year-old tea farmer’s house and expand the range of hands-on agricultural and nature activities on offer.
