Sake Brewery Open Houses in Fukuoka Prefecture

Kyushu may be best known for shochu, but Fukuoka Prefecture is actually one of Japan’s leading sake-producing regions, home to 68 sake breweries today. In the Edo period, there were more than 600 breweries, and by the Meiji era Fukuoka ranked second nationwide in sake production. The prefecture is also a major producer of sake rice, including the famous “Yamada Nishiki” as well as Fukuoka-original varieties such as “Yume Ikken,” “Gin no Sato,” and “Jugemu.” Sake made with locally grown rice is brewed throughout the region.

Each spring, breweries hold “Sakagura Biraki” (brewery open house events) to celebrate and showcase freshly brewed sake made from late autumn to early spring. Although many events were postponed or canceled in recent years due to COVID-19, the lively atmosphere has finally returned. Visitors can hear directly from brewers about their craftsmanship, sample a wide variety of signature sakes, and enjoy many seasonal highlights unique to this time of year. Some events require advance reservations, so please be sure to check details before visiting.
