The Annual Opening of the Jojima Sake Breweries

城島酒蔵びらき

Along with Hyogo Prefecture’s Nada District, Kyoto’s Fushimi District, and Hiroshima’s Saijo District, Chikugo’s Jojima is an area well known for its sake. Blessed with the rich waters of the Chikugo River, large grain Chikugo rice, aromatic Hita (Oita Prefecture) cedar, and the convenience of a water transportation system, Jojima has long thrived as a sake producing region. Eight breweries in the towns of Jojima and Mizuma continue to brew highly unique sake even today.
From comparative tastings of Chikugo’s various sakes, food and sake stalls, and “power hot pot” made with locally grown vegetables and handmade miso to sales of local goods and performances of sake-making songs and Japanese drums, visitors to the annual “Opening of the Jojima Breweries” will find a multitude of hospitality-themed events to enjoy, all centered around the main venue, Chomin no Mori. The pure, newly brewed sakes only available at the opening of the breweries are a can’t-miss attraction for sake lovers! Free shuttle buses are operated to each brewery so that visitors can try them all! Allow yourself to be intoxicated by the distinctively cheerful atmosphere that envelops the entire town for the day and by its wonderful sakes!
