Former Osaka Shosen Mercantile Steamship Co. Building

門司港レトロ地区「旧大阪商船」

The former Osaka Shosen Mercantile Steamship Co. building is a two-story, western-style wooden building that was erected in 1917 as the company’s Moji Branch.
The building was constructed in the Vienna Secession style that swept through Europe in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, as evidenced by the orange tiles on the exterior walls. The large arched window at the top of the building and the tower above it are particularly striking!
Visitors will find the Kaikyo Roman Hall for multipurpose use on the first floor, and the “Watase Seizo and the Sea” gallery (admission charged) as well as the Maritime Corner (free) on the second floor.

*About the Building: Registered Tangible Cultural Asset; built in 1917.
*Area: 669.88 square meters (about 7210 square feet)
*Accessibility: Wheelchair ramp; wheelchair rental; wheelchair-accessible bathrooms; elevators; guide dogs permitted; discounts to the Seizo gallery for persons with disabilities and senior citizens
