Chikushino City Festival: Futsukaichi Onsen & Mt. Tenpai Moon-Viewing Party with Iki-Iki Commerce and Agriculture Fair
筑紫野市祭 二日市温泉と天拝山観月会withいきいき商工農フェスタ
Honoring the legacy of Lord Sugawara no Michizane and admiring the harvest moon
This festival marks its 90th edition this year. It is held every autumn on the night of the harvest moon to honor the spirit of Sugawara no Michizane, who, according to tradition, was exiled to Enoki-sha Temple in Minamikan, Dazaifu, in Shōtai 4 (901). During his exile, he is said to have climbed Mount Tenpai for 100 consecutive days, appealing his innocence while praying for the Emperor’s well-being and peace for the people. The festival, which has continued since Taisho 13 (1924), is a historic and time-honored tradition.
On this night, ceremonial bonfires are lit at Buzoji Temple grounds, Tenpai Park, and the summit of Mount Tenpai. The sacred fire, brought from Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, is first kindled at the foot of the mountain in Tenpai Park. At the park, visitors can enjoy stage performances, food stalls, and a fireworks display with about 390 shots lighting up the night sky.
