Buzouji Temple Wisteria Festival

武蔵寺の藤まつり

Precious and magnificent wisteria flowers that tell the history of Buzouji Temple to future generations.

Busouji Temple, the oldest temple in Kyushu, is also known as 'Wisteria Temple' and is famous for its wisteria flowers. The 'Choja no wisteria', which is said to be 1,300 years old, was planted by Toramaro Fujiwara, a legendary figure who is said to have founded the temple, in the hope that it would grow.
The wisteria trellis is 20 m wide and 10 m deep, and in mid-April, when it is at its best, beautiful light-purple flowers bloom in clusters over 1 m long and a noble, sweet fragrance can be enjoyed.
The Wisteria Memorial Ceremony, held every year on 29 April, where sake is poured at the base of the wisteria trellis, is one of the three major events at Busouji. It is said that pouring sake into the wisteria will make it healthier, and many visitors come to the temple to take advantage of the longevity of the wisteria.
At the same time, the Futsukaichi Onsen Wisteria Festival is held in the neighbouring Amagaisan Historical and Natural Park, which is a great success every year.
